글의 주제문은 we adjust ~ and return to our personal default level of well-being입니다. 주어 역할의 Whether절, like + 명사 + 분사, 도치 so does ~를 함께 정리했습니다.

Whether we feel happy or sad, content or discontent, is not determined merely by each individual successive moment of life experience ― a good thing happens and I’m happy, a bad thing happens and I’m sad. While our experiences affect our mood, we are not blown in a completely new direction by each gust of wind. As humans, we adjust ― to new information and events both good and bad ― and return to our personal default level of well-being. There will be highs and lows, but over time, like water seeking its own level, we are pulled toward our baseline ― back up after bad news and back down after good. The euphoria of first love fades, and so does the despair of a break-up. This tendency is best seen with little kids and their toy joy: When they get what they’ve longed for, they believe they will be happy for the rest of their lives. And for the first few minutes of the rest of their lives, they are. But then the kids ― like adults ― ________.

Whether we feel happy or sad, 만족한content or 불만족한discontent, is not determined 단지merely by each individual 연속적인successive moment of life experience ― a good thing happens and I’m happy, a bad thing happens and I’m sad. / While our experiences affect our mood, we are not blown in a completely new direction by each 돌풍gust of wind.
경험이 기분에 영향은 주지만 we are not blown in a completely new direction by each gust of wind(돌풍마다 새 방향으로 날아가지는 않는다) → 사람에게는 돌아갈 기준선이 있다는 것이 글의 출발점.
구문 — Whether ~ (주어 역할 명사절) / not merely by ~ / While (~이기는 하지만)
Whether we feel happy or sad ~ is not determined ~: Whether절 전체가 주어이므로 동사는 is. merely는 '단지'로 by 이하를 한정. While our experiences affect our mood의 While은 '~이기는 하지만'이라는 양보. be blown in a new direction은 '새로운 방향으로 날려가다'라는 수동태 비유.

As humans, we 적응하다adjust ― to new information and events both good and bad ― and return to our personal 기본 수준default level of 행복, 안녕well-being. / There will be highs and lows, but over time, like water seeking its own level, we are pulled toward our 기준선baseline ― back up after bad news and back down after good. / The 극도의 행복감euphoria of first love 사라지다fades, and so does the 절망despair of a break-up.
핵심 단서 — adjust · return to our default level
we adjust ~ and return to our personal default level of well-being이 글의 주제문.
구문 — both A and B / like + 명사 + 분사 / so + 조동사 + 주어 (도치)
events both good and bad: both A and B가 events를 뒤에서 꾸밈. like water seeking its own level '자기 수위를 찾는 물처럼'(seeking은 water를 꾸미는 현재분사). and so does the despair of a break-up은 '~도 그렇다'라는 도치로, does는 앞의 fades를 대신함.
VOCABULARY
★ adjust 적응하다, 조정하다 / ★ default 기본의 / ★ well-being 행복, 안녕 / ★ seek 찾다 / ★ baseline 기준선 / euphoria 극도의 행복감 / ★ fade 사라지다, 희미해지다 / ★ despair 절망 / ★ break-up 결별
This 경향tendency is best seen with little kids and their toy joy: When they get what they’ve 간절히 바라다longed for, they believe they will be happy for the rest of their lives. / And for the first few minutes of the rest of their lives, they are. / But then the kids ― like adults ― ① 적응한다________.
정답 ① adapt 근거 — adjust and return to baseline
이어지는 결론은 앞서 말한 we adjust ~ and return to our personal default level의 반복이므로 빈칸은 ① adapt(적응한다). ② regret(후회한다), ④ struggle(힘겨워한다)은 장난감을 얻은 상황과 맞지 않고, ③ explore(탐색한다), ⑤ celebrate(축하한다)는 '기준선으로 되돌아간다'는 주제와 무관.
구문 — be best seen with ~ / long for / the rest of one’s life / they are (반복 생략)
This tendency is best seen with ~ '이 경향은 ~에서 가장 잘 드러난다'(수동태 + 최상급 부사). what they’ve longed for는 get의 목적어인 관계대명사절, long for '간절히 바라다'. for the rest of their lives '남은 인생 동안'. 마지막 they are는 they are happy에서 happy가 생략된 형태.
VOCABULARY
★ tendency 경향 / ★ long for 간절히 바라다 / ★ the rest of ~의 나머지 / ★ adapt 적응하다 / ★ regret 후회하다 / ★ struggle 힘겨워하다, 분투하다

3. Core Summary
Good and bad events move our mood only briefly, because people adjust to them and are pulled back to a personal baseline of well-being, just as children quickly get used to the toy they longed for.
