주어 역할의 Whether or not절, as measured, 간접의문문 what minute ~을 함께 정리했습니다.

One of the things that makes uncertainty difficult for members of the public to appreciate is that ________. Take, for example, the distance between Earth and the sun: 1.49597 × 10⁸ km, as measured at one point during the year. This seems relatively precise; after all, using six significant digits means I know the distance to an accuracy of one part in a million or so. However, if the next digit is uncertain, that means the uncertainty in knowing the precise Earth-sun distance is larger than the distance between New York and Chicago! Whether or not the quoted number is “precise” therefore depends on what I’m intending to do with it. If I care only about what minute the sun will rise tomorrow, then the number quoted here is fine. If I want to send a satellite to orbit just above the sun, however, then I would need to know distances more accurately.

One of the things that makes 불확실성uncertainty difficult for members of the public to 이해하다appreciate is that ① 불확실성의 중요성은 상대적이다________. / Take, for example, the distance between Earth and the sun: 1.49597 × 10⁸ km, as measured at one point during the year. / This seems 상대적으로relatively 정확한precise; 결국after all, using six 유효 숫자significant digits means I know the distance to an 정확도accuracy of one part in a million or so.
구문 — One of the things that ~ / for + 의미상 주어 + to V / Take, for example, ~ / as measured
One of the things that makes ~: that절이 things를 꾸미고, make + 목적어 + 형용사 구조. for members of the public은 to appreciate의 의미상 주어. Take, for example, the distance ~는 '예로 ~을 들어보자'라는 명령문. as measured at one point는 as it is measured에서 주어와 be동사가 생략된 형태.
VOCABULARY
★ uncertainty 불확실성 / ★ the public 대중 / ★ appreciate 이해하다, 인식하다 / ★ measure 측정하다 / ★ relatively 상대적으로 / ★ precise 정확한 / ★ after all 결국 / ★ accuracy 정확도
However, if the next 자릿수digit is uncertain, that means the uncertainty in knowing the precise Earth-sun distance is larger than the distance between New York and Chicago!
구문 — that means (that) ~ / the uncertainty in V-ing / 비교급 + than
that means the uncertainty ~ is larger than ~: means 뒤 that이 생략된 명사절이고 그 안의 주어가 the uncertainty, 동사가 is. the uncertainty in knowing the precise Earth-sun distance에서 in은 '~하는 데 있어서'이고 뒤에 동명사가 옴.
VOCABULARY
★ digit 자릿수, 숫자 / ★ uncertain 불확실한 / ★ precise 정확한 / ★ larger than ~보다 더 큰 / ★ distance 거리
Whether or not the quoted number is “precise” 따라서therefore depends on what I’m intending to do with it. / If I care only about what minute the sun will rise tomorrow, then the number quoted here is fine. / If I want to send a 위성satellite to 궤도를 돌다orbit just above the sun, however, then I would need to know distances more 정확하게accurately.
따라서 인용된 숫자가 ‘정확한지’ 아닌지는 내가 그것으로 무엇을 하려고 하느냐에 달려 있다. / 만약 내가 내일 태양이 몇 분에 뜰지에만 관심이 있다면, 여기 인용된 숫자로 충분하다. / 하지만 만약 내가 태양 바로 위 궤도를 도는 위성을 보내고 싶다면, 나는 거리를 더 정확하게 알 필요가 있을 것이다.
정답 ① 근거 — depends on what I’m intending to do with it
같은 숫자라도 일출 시각을 알고 싶을 때는 충분하고, 위성 궤도를 계산할 때는 부족함. 즉 불확실성이 얼마나 중요한지는 목적에 따라 달라진다 → ① the significance of uncertainty is relative가 정답. ③ '모든 측정의 불확실성이 같다'는 본문과 반대이고, ④ '측정은 의도와 무관하다'는 마지막 문장과 정면으로 어긋남. ②·⑤는 지문에서 다루지 않음.
구문 — Whether or not ~ (주어 명사절) / depend on + 간접의문문 / what minute ~ / 가정법 would
Whether or not the quoted number is “precise” 전체가 주어이고 동사는 depends. what I’m intending to do with it은 on의 목적어인 간접의문문. what minute the sun will rise도 간접의문문으로 what + 명사 형태. then I would need to ~의 would는 if절의 가정을 받는 표현.
VOCABULARY
★ whether or not ~인지 아닌지 / ★ quote 인용하다 / ★ depend on ~에 달려 있다 / ★ intend 의도하다 / ★ care about ~에 관심을 두다 / ★ satellite 위성 / ★ orbit 궤도를 돌다 / ★ accurately 정확하게 / ★ significance 중요성 / ★ relative 상대적인

3. Core Summary
A number can look precise and still hide an error as large as the distance between two cities, so whether that uncertainty matters depends entirely on what the number is used for.
어떤 숫자는 정확해 보이면서도 두 도시 사이의 거리만큼 큰 오차를 숨기고 있을 수 있으므로, 그 불확실성이 중요한지 아닌지는 전적으로 그 숫자를 어디에 쓰는지에 달려 있다.
Core Summary Vocabulary
hide 숨기다 / error 오차 / matter 중요하다 / entirely 전적으로 / be used for ~에 쓰이다
4. 서술형 대비 한 문장
Whether or not the quoted number is “precise” depends on what I’m intending to do with it.
(인용된 숫자가 ‘정확한지’ 아닌지는 내가 그것으로 무엇을 하려고 하느냐에 달려 있다.)
