Even before telescopes existed, people looked out into space and tried to understand the universe.
(A) Using a telescope, the Italian scientist Galileo Galilei discovered the four largest moons of Jupiter and observed craters on Earth’s Moon. He also confirmed that Copernicus’ theory was correct. Over the centuries, scientific discoveries and information from telescopes advanced our knowledge of how the universe works.
(B) He concluded that the view of the universe accepted at the time ─ that the Sun traveled around Earth ─ was wrong, and that it was in fact Earth that traveled around the Sun. Despite widespread objections to his ideas, he published his theory in a book. Later astronomers built on Copernicus’ work. Technological improvements led to the development of the telescope in the early 17th century.
(C) The Egyptians, Babylonians, Greeks, and Maya were among the first peoples to map the movements of the stars. In Europe, a 16th-century Polish mathematician named Nicolaus Copernicus put forth a revolutionary idea. Copernicus watched the stars and took measurements by eye.

~하기도 전에Even before 망원경telescopes existed, / people looked out into space / and tried to 이해하다understand the 우주universe.

Even before telescopes existed로 시작 → 망원경이 없던 가장 이른 시기부터 시간 순서로 전개될 것을 예고.

Even before + S + V / look out into ~ / try to V

Even before telescopes existed: 접속사 before가 이끄는 시간 부사절, even은 '~하기도 전에'로 강조. looked out into space '우주로 밖을 내다보았다'. tried to understand '이해하려고 노력했다'(try to V), looked와 tried가 and로 병렬.

Copernicus

Babylonians, Greeks, and Maya were among the first peoples to 지도로 만들다map the movements of the stars. / In Europe, a 16th-century Polish 수학자mathematician named Nicolaus Copernicus 제기했다put forth a 혁명적인revolutionary idea. / Copernicus watched the stars and took 측정measurements by eye.

(B)의 첫 단어 He는 Copernicus를 받으므로 (C) 뒤에 와야 하고, (A)는 Using a telescope라 망원경 발명 뒤여야 함 → (C)가 첫 번째.

구문 — among the first peoples to V / named ~ (과거분사구) / put forth

were among the first peoples to map ~ '~을 지도로 만든 최초의 민족들 중에 있었다'(to부정사가 the first peoples 수식). people이 '민족'일 때는 복수형 peoples. a 16th-century Polish mathematician named Nicolaus Copernicus: named 이하는 앞 명사를 꾸미는 과거분사구 '~라고 불리는'. put forth '(의견을) 제기하다', took measurements by eye '맨눈으로 측정했다'.

VOCABULARY

(B) He 결론지었다concluded / that the view of the universe 받아들여진accepted at the time ─ / that the Sun traveled around Earthwas wrong, / and that it was in fact Earth that traveled around the Sun. / ~에도 불구하고Despite 널리 퍼진widespread 반대objections to his ideas, / he 출판했다published his 이론theory in a book. / Later 천문학자astronomers ~을 바탕으로 삼다built on Copernicus’ work. / 기술적인Technological 개선improvements ~로 이어지다led to the development of the telescope in the early 17th century.

Technological improvements led to the development of the telescope가 (A)의 Using a telescope로 이어지는 다리 역할.

구문 — conclude that A and that B / 대시 사이 동격 / It ~ that 강조구문 / Despite + 명사

concluded that ~ was wrong, and that it was in fact Earth that ~: concluded의 목적어 that절 두 개가 병렬. 첫 that절의 주어는 the view of the universe accepted at the time(과거분사구 수식)이고, 대시 사이 that the Sun traveled around Earth는 그 관점의 내용을 설명하는 동격절. 둘째 that절 속 it was in fact Earth that traveled around the Sun은 It ~ that 강조구문 '사실 태양 주위를 돈 것은 바로 지구였다'. Despite는 전치사라 뒤에 명사구, build on '~을 토대로 삼다', lead to '~로 이어지다'.

VOCABULARY

conclude 결론짓다 / ★ accept 받아들이다 / ★ in fact 사실은 / ★ despite ~에도 불구하고(in spite of) / ★ widespread 널리 퍼진(common) / ★ objection 반대(opposition) / ★ publish 출판하다 / ★ astronomer 천문학자 / ★ build on ~을 바탕으로 삼다 / ★ technological 기술적인 / ★ improvement 개선, 향상 / ★ lead to ~로 이어지다(result in)
