Once we achieve a certain acceptable level of data quality, the next step is to maintain the status quo by preventing new errors from being introduced into the data. This proves to be extremely difficult, actually far more difficult than identifying and correcting existing problems. The two preventive measures that provide the biggest immediate return on investment are monitoring data integration interfaces and ensuring quality during data conversion and consolidation. These measures address the two most common external sources of data problem. Also, using the findings of the data quality assessment in itself helps prevent data quality from deterioration in more ways than one. For example, it helps improve data collection procedures and seriously limits potential data decay.
