You hear again and again that some of the greatest composers were misunderstood in their own day. Not everyone could understand the compositions of Beethoven, Brahms, or Stravinsky in their day. The reason for this initial lack of acceptance is unfamiliarity. The musical forms, or ideas expressed within them, were completely new. And yet, this is exactly one of the things that makes them so great. Effective composers have their own ideas. Have you ever seen the classic movie Amadeus? The composer Antonio Salieri is the “host” of this movie; he’s depicted as one of the most famous non-great composers― he lived at the time of Mozart and was completely overshadowed by him. Now, Salieri wasn’t a bad composer; in fact, he was a very good one. But he wasn’t one of the world’s great composers because his work wasn’t [빈칸]. What he wrote sounded just like what everyone else was composing at the time.

①simple
② original
③ familiar
④ conventional
⑤ understandable

You hear again and again that some of the greatest composers were misunderstood in their own day. Not everyone could understand the compositions of Beethoven, Brahms, or Stravinsky in their day. The reason for this initial lack of 수용acceptance is 낯섦unfamiliarity. The musical forms, or ideas expressed within them, were completely new. And yet, this is exactly one of the things that makes them so great.

ideas expressed within them: 과거분사구가 ideas를 수식.
one of the things that makes them so great: 본문에서는 that절의 동사로 makes를 사용하며, 핵심은 새로운 시도가 위대함을 만든다는 내용입니다.

VOCABULARY

Salieri

Effective composers have their own ideas. Have you ever seen the classic movie Amadeus? The composer Antonio Salieri is the “host” of this movie; he’s depicted as one of the most famous non-great composers― he lived at the time of Mozart and was completely overshadowed by him.

be depicted as ~: “~로 묘사되다”.
was overshadowed by him: him은 Mozart를 가리킵니다.

VOCABULARY

Now, Salieri wasn’t a bad composer; in fact, he was a very good one. But he wasn’t one of the world’s great composers because his work wasn’t [빈칸]. What he wrote sounded just like what everyone else was composing at the time.

빈칸 뒤의 sounded just like what everyone else was composing이 직접적인 근거입니다.

because his work wasn’t original:
just like ~: “~와 똑같이”.

VOCABULARY

빈칸 앞의 부정어 wasn’t와 뒤의 just like everyone else를 함께 읽습니다.

3. Core Summary

Great composers create original music, while Salieri’s music resembled what others were composing despite his skill.
