German chemist Agnes Pockels was born in Venice, Italy, in 1862, and her family moved to Brunswick, Germany, when she was nine years old. She excelled in school and yearned to study science at college, but she needed to be home to take care of her sickly parents. Agnes stayed interested in science, however, reading any textbooks she could find and trying out her own experiments. While washing dishes, she noticed that different things affected the surface tension of water. She made the first-ever device to measure surface tension in her kitchen. In January 1891, Agnes wrote to British physicist Lord Rayleigh about her experiments and results. Lord Rayleigh was so impressed with her work that he sent it to Nature magazine, a famous science journal, which published the letter. Agnes continued her research on surfaces and solutions for over 40 years, publishing more papers on her own and winning awards. In 1932, she was given an honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Brunswick.
