How do children learn new concepts? The traditional view of conceptual change was that new learned theories replace old ones: once a child learns that the Earth rotates around the sun, their previous theory (based on their experience of seeing the sun move) that the sun rotates around the Earth, would be overwritten. Recent evidence from adults suggests something more surprising: that these old, incorrect theories remain stored in the brain; often we still need them to drive our perceptual expectations such as where to look for the sun in the sky. But in an educational context, we need inhibitory control to suppress them in order to reach the newer, correct theories. The naive incorrect theory is more familiar and automatic; the new theory needs time and deliberate suppression of the old theory to be actively retrieved.

① the use of short-term memory in making conceptual changes
② the importance of repetition in children's conceptual development
③ the role of visual observation in children's conceptual understanding
④ the need to suppress persistent old theories in conceptual learning
⑤ the process of using old theories to support newer ones

1. Core Summary

Old, incorrect theories remain in the brain even after we learn new ones, so learning the correct theory requires time and deliberate suppression of the old one.

Learning something new means holding back what we already believe.
